To Plant:

Leeks need a bit of time to grow but are worth it. Start by planting seeds indoors about 8 to 10 weeks before the last frost. 

Plant seeds 1/4 inch deep and 1/2 inch apart. When it’s time, move them outside.

Plant them 4 to 8 inches deep and 4 to 6 inches apart, leaving about 20 inches between rows.

If planting directly outside, do it 4 weeks before the last frost.

To Grow:

Leeks like soil with a pH of 6.2 to 6.8. They grow well near carrots, celery, beets, and onions but not near beans and peas.

Water them well and keep the area free of weeds. Adding mulch helps keep the soil moist and weeds away.

To Harvest:

Leeks are ready in late summer or early fall. Loosen the soil and lift the leeks by the roots.

Harvest what you need until a freeze is expected, then pick all remaining leeks. Use compost and liquid fertilizer to feed your leeks every week.

Common Pests and Diseases

Leeks can get pests like leafminers, thrips, and onion maggots. Diseases include Botrytis leaf blight and damping-off.

Pests:

Leafminers: Cause white spots and leaf loss. Remove plant debris and use insecticides if needed.

Thrips: Cause discolored and scarred leaves. Overhead watering can help. Use insecticides if needed.

Onion Maggots: Cause stunted seedlings and deformed bulbs. Clean up debris and use insecticides if needed.

Diseases:

Botrytis Leaf Blight: Causes white lesions on leaves. Prevent proper spacing and reduce humidity.

Damping-off: Affects young plants. Avoid overwatering and provide good air circulation.

Substitutes

If you can’t find leeks, you can use:

  • Shallots
  • White or sweet onions
  • Green onions
  • Garlic or garlic powder
  • Celery

Soup Recipe

Here’s a simple leek soup to try:

Ingredients:

  • 6 leeks
  • 1 onion

Method:
