Cultivation

Sun

Full (6-8 Hours). If the afternoon sun is too harsh, plant where it has indirect afternoon sun.

Hydration

Occasionally. This drought-tolerant herb pulls moisture from the air and prefers soil on the dryer side.

Check 1″ below the surface for moisture before watering again. Ensure good drainage.

Soil

Needs excellent drainage. Prefers sandy, loamy soil but is tolerant of most soils.

Indoors

Place in a south-facing window for plenty of light. Avoid direct sunlight through the glass to prevent burning.

Keep in a large pot at 60-70 degrees.

Place on marbles or rocks in a drainage pan with water. Mist weekly.

Growth Pattern

Can live for 3-4 years, reaching up to 2′ in height and 3′ in width.

Prune thick woody stems in spring. Young plants need winter protection.

Propagation

Cutting 3 “-6” of green stem (not woody), remove bottom leaves, place in peat, perlite, and sand mix, wrap in a plastic bag to keep moist, and remove the bag when roots start to form.

Layer and divide.

Harvesting

Pick small amounts all year (whole stem). Gather the main leaf crop in the morning just before flowering.

Cut no more than 1/3 of the plant.

Preserving

Wash first. Lay on a tray or tie bundles together and hang upside down in a warm, dry area out of direct sunlight.

Once dry, put into airtight containers. Freeze in a zip lock bag or ice cube tray with oil/water.
